window shopping #8 (London: tart cards)

I took these photos in London’s West End during 2001-2003. “Tart cards” advertising “all services” were then ubiquitous in the UK capital’s iconic red telephone boxes. Nowadays they seem scarcer.

Placing tart cards in phone boxes was made illegal by the passing of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 … By 2002 most convicted carders were receiving fines of £200–£1000, although persistent offenders were receiving jail terms of 28 days … British Telecom was removing 150,000 tart cards per week from central London telephone boxes and it had call-barred 500 of the telephone numbers used on tart cards.

Out of sight, out of mind? Somehow I doubt it.
